This reminds me that my patients depend on me, my team and their human family to notice when they are not feeling well. They can not tell us that they have a toothache or that they feel unwell after eating or their appetite has changed. In fact, genetically they are designed to not ‘look’ sick because, in the wild world, it made them vulnerable to attack.

We all do our best to monitor our pets for any health changes and an important part of health screening is an annual visit to the vet. At this visit you tell us about your pet, we ask questions, we perform a nose to tail tip exam and with this information make a health assessment. We are then able to make recommendations about how to address concerns and optimize health for your pet.

But, we are all on the outside looking in and I always wish I could look inside every pet I examine and, in a way, I can. By analyzing blood, urine and feces I can make a better health assessment for every pet I examine. And, this additional information greatly improves the accuracy of my health assessment.

We would like to do this advanced screening in all pets and, I suspect, so would every pet parent but the added cost can be a concern.
